National Human Rights Commission

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India, established on October 12, 1993, operates under the Protection of Human Rights Act (PHRA), 1993, as amended by the Protection of Human Rights (Amendment) Act, 2006. Aligned with the Paris Principles, endorsed by the UN General Assembly, it embodies India's commitment to promoting and safeguarding human rights. The NHRC's mandate, outlined in Section 2(1)(d) of the PHRA, encompasses rights to life, liberty, equality, and dignity guaranteed by the Constitution or international covenants, enforceable by Indian courts. Serving as a guardian of human rights, the NHRC plays a crucial role in upholding these fundamental values in India.
