Housing Development Finance Corporation Limited (HDFC Ltd) was one of the pioneering financial institutions granted preliminary approval by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in 1994 to establish a private sector bank, aligning with the RBI's banking industry liberalization policy. HDFC Bank, incorporated in Mumbai in August 1994, commenced operations as a Scheduled Commercial Bank in January 1995. On April 4, 2022, the merger of HDFC Ltd., India's largest housing finance company, and HDFC Bank, the largest private sector bank, was announced.
