Indian Railways
Indian Railways (IR), overseen by the Ministry of Railways, Government of India, is the national railway system operator. By 2023, it will have grown into the world's fourth-largest railway network, with 104,647 km (65,025 mi) of tracks and 68,426 km (42,518 mi) of routes, of which 60,451 km (37,563 mi) are electrified. Boasting over 1.2 million employees, IR ranks as India's second-largest employer and the ninth-largest globally. Post-independence, it emerged from the merger of 42 railway companies, covering 55,000 km (34,000 mi). The network was initially organized into six regional zones in 1951–52, gradually expanding to 18 zones for administrative efficiency.
